I’m starting this blog as a complement to my radio show, “Yew Piney Mountain,” which airs on Wednesdays from 6-7 pm CST on KRUI, 89.7 FM in Iowa City, Iowa. You can also listen to a live stream of the station by clicking on the KRUI link to the right.
If you tune in expect to hear lots of fiddles and banjos and string bands, along with healthy doses of ballad singers, brother duos, early country blues, early bluegrass, shape note singing, jug bands, and other various and sundry forms of musical expression that fit under a big-tent definition of “old-time music”. I’ll be playing recordings by both historical and contemporary musicians, including lots of field recordings. I also hope to have occasional in-studio performances from local and visiting musicians.
Playlists from the show are posted here, along with information about local and regional old-time music events and links to sites that listeners of the show might find interesting.
If you’re a musician or label and would like to submit your music for possible airplay on Yew Piney Mountain, please send promos to:

I hope there’s not a d.j. code of ethics that prevents you from playing the occasional Gilded Bats track…
Good luck with it, and I can’t wait! I’ll be streaming it in the kitchen while I make dinner.
Hey Norbert! Great first show! I was thinking a little Karen Dalton, who is unto herself a tragic love story, is in order for your V day show. That Katie Cruel song would work, but there are others that would be phenomenol as well. I’ve never heard her on the radio before… that would be a treat. – Katie Roche
Howdy Norbert,
Cats and more….timely. Our outdoor kitty just had her kitties indoor—in my closet.
Thanks for the very nice mixture of old dead guys with live kickin’ souls.
Just so happy you got two hours!!!
I leave for Costa Rica in 24 hours. Sadly, I’ll miss your show next week.
Always a treat….

Yo.
Mr. Grey’s in the house!
Hey! Why not 2 hours every week? Great show. thanks. Where’d you pick up that One Eyed Dog album?
Howdy! Thanks for listening. The show is actually going to be 2 hours through the summer, 6-8 pm CST on Thursdays. A friend of mine has the One Eyed Dog cassette. I don’t think it’s in print any longer.

Hey Norbert,
Haven’t seen you in years and years. Cool idea for a show. Come on down here for Jackpot or Blackpot, both in late October.
Listening in from India thanks to Radioshift.
You can never play too much banjo. Or fiddle.
Keep it up.
